Therapists work closely with patients and their families to determine the source of the client’s difficulties and develop very specific treatment plans to make the entire process of eating easier and more enjoyable.

​Feeding disorders related to sensory/behavioral issues may be characterized by:

  • Failure to progress with food/texture progression

  • Food refusal

  • Fear/anxiety surrounding mealtime/eating

  • Coughing/choking or mismanagement during feeding

  • Resistant/disruptive behavior during mealtime

  • Messy eating

Structural/Medical Feeding Disorders

​Feeding disorders related to structural/medical issues may be characterized by:

  • Inability to self feed; utilize utensils appropriately

  • Reduced/poor oral motor skills

  • Coughing/choking or mismanagement during feeding

  • Messy eating

  • Food refusal
